Kyla is an experienced practitioner in the areas of bankruptcy and insolvency law. She frequently acts for indenture trustees and holders in complex disputes involving indenture provisions. Kyla has developed particular expertise in leading companies through reorganizations under the Canada Business Corporations Act.
REPRESENTATIVE WORK
- Representing the debtor in the CCAA proceeding involving Hollinger Inc.
- Represented the court-appointed monitor Ernst & Young in the restructuring of Stelco, one of the most significant CCAA restructurings in Canadian history
- Canadian counsel to California class action claimants in the Muscletech CCAA and Chapter 15 restructuring
- Acted as part of the team advising GE Capital Aviation Services, Inc., a principal stakeholder in the Air Canada CCAA proceedings
- Assisted in the representation of the largest secured creditor of Canada 3000 during the liquidation of the airline's assets
Kyla was in the top 10 per cent of her class throughout law school and was awarded the Whiteside Award in recognition of her commitment to her peers, the law school and the community.
Kyla is a member of INSOL International, the Turnaround Management Association (Toronto Chapter), the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring, the International Women's Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation, the Ontario Bar Association, Insolvency Section, the Canadian Bar Association and the Toronto Lawyers Association.
